What this site cannot do
COLA Ledger is an independent reference. It has no access to anyone’s Social Security record, cannot look up an individual benefit, cannot change a payment, cannot process a claim or an appeal, and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the Social Security Administration, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services or any United States government agency.
For anything about your own record or payment, contact SSA directly or sign in to your my Social Security account. Please do not send personal information, benefit amounts, dates of birth or Social Security numbers to the address above — we do not need them and do not want to hold them.
What to write about
| Subject | What happens |
|---|---|
| A figure looks wrong | The most useful message we receive. Include the page and, if you have it, the government publication you are checking against. It gets verified against the primary source, and if it is wrong it is corrected, rebuilt and logged with the date on the correction log. |
| How was this calculated? | Most answers are already written up: the COLA computation and the site methodology cover the regimes, the rounding steps and every place a source and our arithmetic disagree. If the answer is not there, ask and it will be added. |
| Reusing a table or a figure | The underlying data is United States federal government work in the public domain and needs no permission from us. A link back to the page you took it from is appreciated and helps readers check it. Embedded attribution links must carry a nofollow attribute. |
| Press and data enquiries | Same address. Figures can be supplied recomputed for a specific benefit amount, and the underlying series can be described precisely enough to reproduce independently. |
| Advertising | Display advertising is served programmatically. There are no direct placements, no sponsored content and no paid links, so there is nothing to sell. The editorial policy explains why. |
Where to go instead, for a decision about your own benefit
- Your record, your payment, your claim — the Social Security Administration, or your my Social Security account.
- Your Medicare premium or an income-related determination — Social Security handles the premium determination; Medicare handles coverage.
- Tax on your benefits — the Internal Revenue Service, or someone who prepares returns. This site publishes the thresholds and computes nobody’s tax.
- Whether to claim now or later — outside this site’s scope permanently. Why.
